A wind shift is a temporary shift  in the wind direction that changes your lay lines and proper course. The start line should always be set up perpendicular to the default wind direction (facing centre). Throwing the wind direction die may bring a shift that changes the wind direction to the right or to the left, but that change is only temporary. Once everyone has played for that throw of die the wind is reset back into its default direction.
